There are only 10 days left to catch Hodge Podge, the Bread Gallery's 2nd Annual Summer Group Show.

The Bread Gallery is dedicated to fostering local emerging and
established artists, who live and create in Hants County. Rich in
history and culture, the landscape and residents of Nova Scotia have
proven themselves as a never ending source of inspiration for local
artists. Their second annual group showcase features a collection
depicting many treasured moments spent in the Maritimes.

4th Annual End of Winter Group Show

I'm happy to once again to be displaying work in the Hants County Arts Council's 4th Annual End of Winter Group Show at the Bread Gallery in Brooklyn, Hants County, NS.

The show opened on Saturday February 7th and continues until March 29th. This showcase features a variety of paintings, sculpture, fibre art, carvings and folk art. Here is a peek at some of the work in the show:

Pre-Shrunk 2015!

Pre-Shrunk is a much loved annual group show hosted by Argyle Fine Art, which asks artists, both established and emerging, to create works on a surface measuring 4” x 5” in the medium of their choosing.

This is my second year participating in the show. I just love this show, personally it is such a great way for me to kick off a new year. The second Christmas had passed I was hard at work trying to out-do my previous miniature creations. I attempted to have a 3-D element in each of these pieces... I especially went all out with my mountain lion.

It's funny, I usually start my feltscapes with very little idea as to what I'm creating. Since you have no choice but to work in layers and slowly build up colours and texture, the sky is usually my first step.

Next comes land and sea.... it's very rare that water doesn't make it into my work. Then I sit and stare at the pieces for a few days. All year long I've wanted to do a Tom Thompson inspired tree. In fact I started a few other pieces intending to add an old twisted pine, but the pieces all evolved into something else, so I said "no, not this time, I'm getting this tree out of my system."

However, once the tree was done I wasn't satisfied, the piece still wasn't about the tree, the tree was just background to something more important. What could be more important? Well how about the mysterious Nova Scotian mountain lion? Both my grandfather and partner Bryan have recollections of seeing this much denied creature deep in the woods of inland Nova Scotia and I myself have been intrigued by the beast since devoting a fourth grade project to the subject.

So now I knew what direction the piece was to take... I was going to add a noble feline front and center that would loom over her environment. Well, that was my intention. In the end she ended up as more of a cutesy cougar kit. I find it so funny how my feltscapes really take on a life of their own.

This piece is just a little three dimensional :)

I fought the urge to add a sumac to this piece, sometimes you just need to let the work sit while you get to know it.

I had started this piece back in the fall and had intended it to be in my show at the Bread Gallery,
but I always felt something was missing. Turns out it was the stars!

Everyone mistook my previous hayfield for cattails, so I thought I'd give it another go!

I had many ideas for how this piece would turn out, eventually my jolly refugee polar boar emerged!

The opening reception for Pre- Shrunk is Friday, January 23rd, at 7pm and the show continues until February 10th. All the works are priced at $175 and there will be at least 200 small works to choose from - including 5 by yours truly!

Hooked on Swoon

I was beyond excited when I heard about this group show. I've always been a fan of the paintings of Carol Morrison; her plien air studies of our Nova Scotian landscape truly capture the simple beauty of the area I like to call home. So when I heard about this challenge, I jumped in feet first!

This juried event, asked rug hookers to choose a piece by a Swoon artist as their inspiration. Both the inspiration piece and the hooked work will be shown together in this unique show.

Last summer I was fortunate enough to organize a show for Carol at the Bread Gallery in Brooklyn along with metal sculptor G. A. Jank. Since August I have carried around copy of their handbill in my car, simply because I love the image so much.

I was so impressed by Carol's collection of work based on Hants County that when Brant Eisner, Swoon's director, put out the call to artists for a group show I knew right away I wanted to hook Carol's paintings... in fact I didn't want to hook just one... I had 3 images in mind that I just knew I had to translate into fibre!

I'm not kidding about my excitement.... I started hooking the White Cliffs, St Croix River on Christmas Eve... I just couldn't stop myself!

Two openings in one day!

I wish I could have been in two places at once yesterday, but I put on my President hat and attended the opening of the Hants County Art Council's 3rd annual group showcase at the Bread Gallery in Brooklyn. This was our biggest show at the Bread Gallery to date, with 21 of our members participating. The variety of work was impressive, with bright colours being a common theme - a perfect compliment to the blahs of winter.

Meanwhile in Halifax it looks like I missed a heck of an opening at Argyle Fine Art. With dog being featured upstairs and cats down stairs "Cat Person. Dog Person. Which are you?" brought many a two legged and 4 legged art lover to the gallery.

Cat Person. Dog Person continues until March 4th and the HCAC Group Showcase continues until March 30th.

HCAC Group Show at the Bread Gallery, March 9th - April 25th

I'm very pleased to announce that I will be participating in the Hants County Arts Council's next group show at the Bread Gallery in Brooklyn, March 9th - April 25th.

I've recently been spending a great deal of time creating mini hooked rugs depicting different characters from my life and I will be displaying them for the first time at this group show.

Other HCAC members who will joining me for this two month show are metal sculptor GA Jank, folk artist Jim Tracey, and painters Carol Morrison, Sharon Ogilvie, Dora Davis, Terrie Greencorn, June Brown, Pauline Sullivan, Andrea Hardy, Sue Robinson and Carlos Da Rosa.

Working in the arts has always been in the cards for me. After a childhood filled with time spent creating using what ever materials available, it was no surprise that by the age of seven I was firmly committed to living the life of an artist as I grew up.

After attending specialized art classes as a teen, I began my post secondary education studying photography and digital imaging, before shifting my focus towards graphic design, printmaking and film studies, eventually receiving a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2003.

Upon graduation I began teaching art to elementary students, and for over two decades I have continued to work as a freelance photographer and designer, collaborating with many musicians, entrepreneurs and not-for-profit organizations.

Since relocating to the tiny community of Ellershouse over a decade ago, my artistic practice has grown to include the creation of tactile fine artworks and products that make use of natural and recycled materials. These days I primarily create using wool from local British milking sheep raised in Avondale, which I carefully hand dye prior to transforming the fibre into vibrant felted wall hangings and functional items like hats and purses.

After taking on the role of facility manager for the Avon River Heritage Society Museum in 2013, the tidal river that surrounds the historic waterfront park became an ongoing source of inspiration for my artwork, especially evident in my 2019 felted series ADAPT, my graphic print Year of the Salmon, and the corresponding installation Ghost Salmon, which was placed along Simpson's Creek in Newport Landing in June of 2019.

When I'm not working or creating I continue to pass along my skills and knowledge by leading fibre art workshops and demonstrations, and by actively volunteering with groups like the Avon River Arts Society and the Full Circle Festival, organizing cultural events and activities.
